John Hardee Expressway, Richland County, South Carolina

Civil Engineering Consulting Services, Inc. and United Contractors evaluated value engineering schemes and reached a 10% construction savings goal by replaceing approximately 1530 linear feet of multi-span dual bridges with a single grade seperation bridge of 190 feet and adding roadway embankment in place of the bridges.  As initially designed, the roadway paralleled either streams or ponds for its entire 1.5 mile length.  CECS engineered modifications to the storm drainage design system, permitted this modification with both state and county personnel and subsequently modified the roadway design.  This design allowed a redesign of the flyover bridge (reducing the bridge length from 1530 feet to 190 feet).  Working together the value engineering project saved over 2.8 million dollars in construction costs.
